Widening Participation Criteria

This scheme is completely free for students and schools. Priority is given to students that meet widening participation criteria defined by UK medical schools. This data is also utilised by our admissions calculator and we update this exhaustive list twice a year.

Medicine applicants that do not meet any of the criteria below are still welcome to apply for a place on the mentorship scheme. However, the number of available spaces can fluctuate with each year so there may be zero/limited places for non-widening participation students.

If you meet at least one of the following criteria, you are eligible for “widening participation” status:

  • I am a young carer
  • I am currently in, or have previously experienced, care from the local authority.
  • I have received/am receiving free school meals.
  • I am estranged from my family.
  • My parents/carers have no experience of Higher Education.
  • I am from an under-represented group (Gypsy, Roma, Traveller Communities, Refugees, Children of Military Family etc.)
  • I have an Educational Health Care Plan (EHC).
  • I am (or have been) in receipt of the 16 to 19 bursary.
  • I am (or have been) in receipt of a means-tested bursary.
  • I am eligible for the UCAT bursary.
  • My home post code is in a POLAR4 quintile 1/2 area or IMD quintile 1/2 area .
  • My GCSE or A-level school performs below the national average in terms of academic performance.

NB: Even if you do not meet any of the above criteria, you can still apply for the mentoring scheme.
